CH-Polymers is focusing on developing sustainable solutions to all industries we serve. Now the focus is the paint industry and how to improve sustainability of various coatings. The 23rd SLF Congress will be held in Drammen, Norway on September 21-22, 2022. A technical presentation will be given by our very own Gun Lundsten. The topic is “Bio-based, Bio-degradable or Sustainable Binders?” Or all of the three? As a waterborne polymer dispersion producer for both paper and packaging, paint and coating as for non-woven applications we are trying to find solutions for all these three needs. But bio-based doesn’t necessarily mean that the solution is bio-degradable – or even sustainable! And a sustainable solution doesn’t necessarily need to be bio-based. In this technical paper we will philosophize around these definitions. We will also report on our findings of the differences in sustainability values and technical performance of waterborne binders when using bio-mass compared to bio-based monomers. Furthermore, we will present our concept of partly bio-based binders developed for paints. Prepared by Gun Lundsten and Teemu Piesanen

At CH-Polymers we believe in combining a healthy business with a healthy lifestyle – we also believe in good causes. CH-Polymers participated in the spring fitness campaign organized by Chemigate. Target of the campaign is to support the physical wellbeing of our employees. For 30 minutes of physical activity (jogging, golfing, gardening etc.) you get one point, maximum one point per day. The goal is to achieve 2,5 points/week to “succeed” with the campaign. We participated with 5 teams and a total of 38 participants from both our Kaipiainen production site and our Raisio R&D and management facility. Each participant succeeded with the campaign, i.e. reached over 2,5 exercise sessions per week. Together, we exercised 2348 times during the 14-week campaign. Calculating 50 cents per each exercise point, our active workforce has raised over €1100, which we’ll be donating to UNICEF to support children in Ukraine. Getting active for a good cause! Thanks to all our employees for their activity!
Planting trees “According to recent studies, planting trees is the best singular way to fight climate change.” Our partner for creating new carbon sinks is Forest Gump Oy, find out more about their mission on the campaign website istutapuita.fi. We are proud and excited to be joining forces with seven universities & research organizations and ten other companies to research and develop SUStainable BIo-based biNders and COatings in the SUSBINCO co-innovation project. The project is supported by Business Finland with the “Veturiohjelma” funding tool as part of the Bio and Circular Finland Programme, and the project aim is also in line with the mission of the Expand Fibre Ecosystem. The consortium project is lead by Principal Investigator Prof. Chunlin Xu from the Laboratory of Natural Materials Technology at Åbo Akademi University. At our side, we are joining SUSBINCO with an own parallel project focusing on developing bio-based solutions for our Paper & Packaging Business Unit, and of course our other teams will utilize the results & synergy for sustainable solutions in the Nonwoven and Paints industries as well. The focus is on both binders and barrier coatings, and especially on bio-based raw materials. The SUSBINCO co-innovation project will run from 1.9.2021-30.11.2023, and our parallel project will run from 30.4.2021-31.10.2023. Have a look at the project partners below! These are the prettiest socks we’ve ever seen! We were surprised to see a familiar logo on a social media post our multi-talented Laboratory Specialist Taru-Ojala Lehtonen posted. Keep reading our interview with Taru below to find out how these beautiful socks were made and what happened to them. First things first, who are you and what’s your position at CH-Polymers? “I’m Taru Ojala-Lehtonen, Laboratory Specialist in the Nonwoven & Specialties team. I have been working at CH-Polymers for 9 years, so my 10-year anniversary will be next year.” How long have you been knitting? “It would have to be at least 15 years… I started knitting because my father needed new wool socks once, and I’ve kept going since.” Where did you get the idea for these socks? “First, my husband Janne wanted some Manchester United socks. So I searched for a template and found one on Pinterest. Then I posted a picture of the ManU socks on facebook, where Director Tuija Andersson commented I have probably made the ManU logo knitting chart myself. I hadn’t, but from that comment I got the idea to try a program that converts pictures to knitting charts. So I figured why […]
Safety first! A safe and healthy work environment is our number one priority at CH-Polymers. Health and safety is the cornerstone of our company and safety awareness is integrated in to all of our operations. The most recent example of this is the investment in our new IBC container warehouse. The new IBC container warehouse was opened this summer at CH-Polymers’ factory site in Kaipiainen. This new facility helps us to improve the flexibility of the product delivery and product quality while also providing a safer working environment for our valuable staff. There are also some new safety improvements within the factory grounds where a new entrance gate for staff vehicles has been introduced; the provision of the new gate will further improve traffic safety in the area. Season’s greetings The factory will operate normally during the summer months.

Hello brand owners! CHP BAR is here and enables you to make your products more sustainable. After several years of intensive R&D work we are proud to be developing sustainable solutions for the packaging industry with our industrial partner Kotkamills. By using CHP BAR barrier technology we offer brand owners a solution for the removal of polyethylene (PE) films from the inside of the food packaging. CHP BAR is already providing sustainability benefits not only for the fast food packaging, but also for more demanding packages, e.g. frozen food and ice cream boxes. Now we have reached our goal of making paper cups completely free from polyethylene! Using CHP BAR enables a compostable solution without PE, improving the recyclability even in countries where the recycling technology is still developing. The CHP BAR range is a ready-to-use coating that can be applied on-line or off-line, with various coaters or printing equipment. We have solutions for board producers and converters a like, so using novel technologies instead of PE is a real option. Now it is up to us all as consumers to make the change happen – the technology is there for you! #circulareconomy #sustainable #PEfree #CHPBAR #barrier CHP BAR […]
