Let us present some of the new, sustainable solutions from the first year of the BIO-F project!
Our BIO-F project is a part of Business Finland’s program Bio and Circular Finland. The focus of the BIO-F project is to minimize the effects of product packaging on the environment.
The focus of the BIO-F project can be divided into four main categories:
- Biodegradable and / or compostable end materials
- Replacement of fossil based / harmful materials
- Maximized durability of end product – longer life cycle
- Increased efficiency
Next, find out how we are meeting these goals.
Water-Based Barrier Coatings (WBBC) for biodegradable end materials and replacing plastics
The latest example of a step change in the performance of water-based barrier coatings is the minimized migration of mineral oil through the barrier layer. This new development allows the use of recycled fiber base, without compromising food safety by keeping the contents protected from harmful substances. In other words – A sustainable solution allowing a higher rate of recycling by replacing plastic films with Water Based Barrier Coatings.

Upcoming bans and restrictions on single-use plastic, for example the ban by 2021 in the EU and restrictions in the coming years in China, have accelerated the implementation of the new plastic-replacing solutions. Our new solutions include:
- Fast food packaging made totally without PE film using CHP BAR
- Sustainable, recyclable, fibre-based board manufacturing with CHP BAR

Sustainability through durability
Sustainability is not always about plastic and fossil raw material replacement. Many technical applications are most sustainable when their durability is maximized. For example, high quality exterior house paints are sustainable when the painting intervals can be extended. The same applies for many technical nonwoven applications. We offer solutions for all these applications, and our R&D helps drive the industry to develop new and more durable products.
Improved efficiency
Efficiency in all actions is key for minimizing the use of natural resources and fighting climate change. We have made our production process more efficient and sustainable through waste water and energy related projects. We have also been able to use the side streams of our process to develop a circular economy product, that is in use as an interior paint binder.
Efficiency when using CHP BAR is naturally increased, as the whole process can be made on line and all trims can be repulped.
Replacing Styrene Butadiene with VAcA (Vinyl acetate Acrylate) paper coating solutions in recycled liner grades produces a superior surface strength and savings in drying energy, all while decreasing the binder dosage by up to 20 %. The improved offset print quality is a clearly visible bonus too! Styrene Acrylate using plants have also seen VAcA technology as a useful tool to optimize their cost structure while improving the product quality.

Improved printability through VAcA technology
The BIO-F project will run until Summer 2021. We are looking forward to introducing even more environmentally friendly products for you. Contact us to learn how we can help you reach your sustainability goals!
