CH-Polymers is proud to join the VTT led two-year MoPo (Multitechnological recycling for polystyrene) project. The goal of the project is to develop the whole value chain around polystyrene recycling. By joining the MoPo project, we seek to use recycled styrene in our products. Polystyrene based fast food packaging trays can be replaced with environmentally friendly natural fiber based solutions coated with CHP BAR, dramatically reducing the total amount of styrene needed for food packaging. When using recycled styrene in our barrier solutions, the need for new styrene is reduced further. Then we can create an even more sustainable food packaging solution. CH-Polymers also considers recycled styrene a valuable way of increasing the sustainable/recycled raw material content in our other products. In other words, our other binder dispersion products used in paper, paint and nonwoven industries can also get a sustainability boost from recycled styrene. The common goal for all our business units is to minimize the environmental impact of all CHP operations. Find out more about the VTT led MoPo project We wish great success to the project & look forward to sharing results with you!
Let us present some of the new, sustainable solutions from the first year of the BIO-F project! Our BIO-F project is a part of Business Finland’s program Bio and Circular Finland. The focus of the BIO-F project is to minimize the effects of product packaging on the environment. The focus of the BIO-F project can be divided into four main categories: Biodegradable and / or compostable end materials Replacement of fossil based / harmful materials Maximized durability of end product – longer life cycle Increased efficiency Next, find out how we are meeting these goals. Water-Based Barrier Coatings (WBBC) for biodegradable end materials and replacing plastics The latest example of a step change in the performance of water-based barrier coatings is the minimized migration of mineral oil through the barrier layer. This new development allows the use of recycled fiber base, without compromising food safety by keeping the contents protected from harmful substances. In other words – A sustainable solution allowing a higher rate of recycling by replacing plastic films with Water Based Barrier Coatings. Enter your e-mail below to download an example of results Upcoming bans and restrictions on single-use plastic, for example the ban by 2021 in […]
When life gives you lemons – make lemonade During unstable times we all need something that will give us that extra boost. People spend more time at home and with the bright spring light shining in it is easy to detect places that would benefit from a touch of decoration. The Painting Season 2020 is starting, so go out and buy (or, actually, please order online) a can of paint. Painting is easy and also something that the whole family can participate in. You see the results immediately and the small improvements or the real masterpieces can be enjoyed by family and friends in all the coming years. Do-It-Yourself! There are a few things to keep in mind though: paint at correct temperature, read the instructions on the paint can do not paint in direct sunlight paint on dry substrate Even if you do everything right, your paint should also be up to the task. Waterborne polymers used as binders in exterior paints give your painting project long time protection. When we are developing our binders, we monitor: flexibility liquid water permeability wet adhesion exterior durability water vapour transmission i.e. “breathing” of the paint …and many other features like dirt-pick-up […]
CH-Polymers has issued the attached instructions to inform our customers and other contacts as well as our employees on the current meetings, teleworking and travel policy in place at all CH-Polymers’ sites. Celebrating the first decade of CH-Polymers A lot has happened in the last 10 years. New people have joined the team and we have strengthened our know-how with experienced professionals as well as new talents. This creates a nice balance for the future business needs and guarantees that the laughter during coffee breaks continues – keeping the spirit high! We believe that in close co-operation with our customers we can develop optimal solutions. We thank all of our customers for you trust and co-operation in making this possible. Some of our business relationships date back 40 years whereas others are new. Again a very nice balance helping us learn new ways to do things. A quick run through of the milestones could look like this: CHP BAR series A lot has been invested to develop new greener solutions for the paper and packaging industry. Our barrier products offer manufacturers a way to minimize the use of plastic films where it is not needed. Improving production efficiency and recycling within the customer´s process are clear benefits and further strengthen the “greener products for next generations” message. Entering a new business area: Paints and Coatings We have broaden our technical understanding and […]
What does sustainability mean? Learn about sustainability as presented by Dr Gun Lundsten (Bio-based coatings conference in Berlin, October 22, 2019) The field of sustainability is famous for its’ many definitions. It is easy to get confused. In the attached presentation we clarify how bio-based material can be exactly the same as the conventional solution, or produce an end product that can be categorized as biodegradable. Check out for yourself. If the presentation leaves you with questions or specific product needs – let us know! Our bio-containing, sustainable, commercially available solutions Barrier products replace PE, wax and fluorochemicals in food packaging applications. These can be applied at the paper machine or converting line. Bio-containing binders for compostable non-woven applications Stay tuned for bio-based solutions for Paints and Coatings!
For the second year now, CH-Polymers will have a 7-member team participating in the Jukola orienteering relay. Now that the snow has melted, the training becomes more frequent. You can for example find CH-Polymers’ workers every week taking part in the evening orienteering events organized by local orienteering clubs around Finland. The Jukola relay is the biggest sports event in Finland and the world’s biggest relay competition in orienteering. This year, about 20 000 orienteers will run in the forests of Kangasala all through the summer night 15.-16.6.! The members of the CH-Polymers’ team are from all the sites and business units of CH-Polymers. They come in all ages, both genders and also with a varied background in orienteering. With a few members having a competitive background (from a few years back) to some newbies with only some free-time orienteering experience, the aim of the team is to find all the control points and make it to the finish line. Above all, this offers the team members the possibility to challenge themselves both physically and mentally, experience the unique atmosphere of Jukola and get to know their workmates in another surrounding. And not to forget, the chance to enjoy the beautiful […]
Sustainable and safe food packaging – presented in Specialty Papers Europe 10.4.2019 in Berlin by Mia Ahokas The European Union parliament just passed a vote on banning a wide-range of single-use plastic items by 2021. Consumers are encouraging the food industry to rethink and to focus on safe and sustainable solutions. Our Water Based Barrier Coating CHP BAR series is an answer to this new demand replacing polyethylene (PE) wax fluorocarbon When introducing new materials to existing technologies you encounter also new challenges like blocking in reel winding pile of sheets in converting during storage and transport The main challenge in application of WBBCs is the blocking phenomenon. Blocking is an undesired adhesion between two surfaces. It can occur for example in a reel in winding, in a pile of sheets or in converting processes. These interactions are influenced by factors such as temperature pressure film roughness thickness and hardness friction moisture With our developed calender blocking test method we were able to efficiently identify blocking tendency of various different WBBC formulations. Moisture plays a crucial role in blocking of WBBCs. Water acts as a plasticizer making the barrier film softer and enabling adhesion to the contact surface. Changing technology […]
